In order to meet those needs, telecommunication infrastructures based on optical transport networks and wavelength division technology are being developed. We can compare optical frequencies to radio frequency spectrum: in both cases, a series of bands with a specific number of frequencies to transport signals have been normalized; the only differences are the physical means and the bandwidth provided for every signal. The technology used for this type of network is DWDM (Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing). This **technique allows for simultaneous transmission**, without interference between networks and ensuring the maximum bandwidth and multiple wavelengths through a single fiber. DWDM channels are normalized and, depending on the separation technology between channels, a specific number of them can be transported – up to 100 multiplexed optical channels through one fiber. Each channel can now transport data rates unheard of until now – more than 400Gb/second – through the same current fiber network deployments.   Cutting-edge DWDM networks – including digital systems that compensate non-linear effects that may appear in optical systems – play a key role in the development of the greater transport networks.
